National Institute of Biology Biotechnology Hub

The National Institute of Biology (NIB), established in 1960, is a leading scientific research institution in Slovenia. Its mission is to advance biological science, focusing on life processes, biodiversity, and environmental health. NIB conducts research supporting sustainable development and improving the quality of life, with various laboratories and international collaborations.

The building was designed to blend into the surrounding forest, with a dark facade to neutralize the structure against the natural landscape. Wooden walkways connect the building to the surrounding plantation of protected cherry trees, preserving the undergrowth and enhancing the space’s depth. Internally, the building is highly functional, with interconnected laboratories, offices, lecture halls, and service spaces. It houses over 120 advanced lab spaces for research, as well as a rooftop research beehive and quarantine greenhouse for plant studies.

The design prioritizes environmental integration, with green roofs and landscaped areas that harmonize with the forested environment. This flexible, technologically advanced facility fosters collaboration, scientific excellence, and sustainability while providing an inviting space for researchers.
