Ptuj Castle Granary
Ptuj Castle is a cultural monument of national importance. The seat of the Salzburg ministerial had the incredible responsibility of controlling the town and protecting it from Hungarian incursions. From the 9th century onward, the courts transformed into vibrant fortifications, with the most significant one being the one on Ptuj Castle Hill.
After years of fruitful discussions about new construction and exciting visions for a modern archaeological museum, the Ministry of Culture decided in early 2023 that the castle granary would be entirely dedicated to the needs of Ptuj archaeology, with exhibition space and storage facilities.
Heritage restoration is an incredibly rewarding task. The layers of time, while often difficult to determine, are the exclusive task of expert conservators and archaeologists. We are thrilled to share that we are currently exploring the exciting potential of renovating the castle buildings. This endeavor is not only about creating a unique and captivating program, but also about ensuring that it is both rational and sustainable in terms of investment. Restoring cultural monuments is incredibly exciting! It’s essential to understand the protected values, treat the substance and historical context with respect, and apply the principles of architecture rather than the hierarchy between function and heritage presentation.
