For the new technology park, the building of the former officer’s pavilion of the abandoned military barracks in Ptuj has been renovated and supplemented with a modern extension. The building is located at the foot of the castle hill, northwest of the old town center of Ptuj, in an area where a military complex was guarded in the past. Today, it is gradually transforming into a central activity area. The building site represents the northeastern corner of the park within the former Pionir Military Barracks in Vičava and serves as the western boundary between the city and its suburbs. Near the former officer’s pavilion from the early 20th century, which was in a deteriorating state before the renovation, several existing trees stand, with a hundred-year-old plane tree providing the garden with the most character.
The historic building is situated in an archaeologically important area near Ptuj Castle, a cultural monument of national significance. Therefore, special attention was given to collaboration with conservators and archaeologists, who made numerous archaeological discoveries during the renovation.
The building houses a technology park for innovative companies operating in the field of advanced information technologies. In line with its new function, the design took into account various criteria, such as the use of natural resources, natural lighting, the stimulating and spatial dynamism of the work environment, adaptable ambiance, and the social activities of employees.
To meet the new requirements, a modern volume was designed using glass and facade panels. A linear spatial element connects the building with the garden, winding across the terrain, embracing the plane tree, rising, and folding while taking on the roles of a retaining wall, pillar, lintel, bench, and railing. The garden landscaping is complemented by new plantings, and concrete panels and benches, which also serve as the base for the new extension, are made from polished concrete.
